Defence Minister Musa: ‘Nigerians Will Foil Any Coup Attempt’

Defence Minister Christopher Musa has warned that anyone plotting a coup in Nigeria is wasting their time. He said citizens themselves would rise to defend democratic rule. Speaking on Arise Television, Musa described the alleged plotters as “a bunch of confused individuals.” He explained that junior officers were lured into a dangerous plan that could have ruined their careers and lives. Musa affirmed that suspects are being allowed due process in court. He also highlighted the government’s commitment to the armed forces, noting regular salary payments, improved allowances and more equipment for troops. He added that any fresh coup attempt would meet strong resistance from Nigerians. The plot first came to light when the Federal Government cancelled Independence Day celebrations in October 2025. Prosecution of military, police and civilian suspects began in January 2026.
