Africa’s Giant… in Name Only? Why Nigeria Lags Behind
I watched last night’s CAF Champions League match in Morocco and was stunned by the stadium, the fans, and the organisation. If you hadn’t been told it was an African league, you’d swear it was European. It made me question Nigeria’s claim as the “Giant of Africa.” Our electricity supply, local sports leagues, tourism industry, and water systems are failing. Politicians live in luxury while ordinary Nigerians face insecurity, unemployment, and crumbling infrastructure. Countries like South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria have built thriving sports, tourism, and public services. A well-run football league alone could create jobs, boost local businesses, and generate media rights and sponsorship revenue. Nigeria has the land, population, talent, and resources to lead. But until we demand competence, structure, and long-term thinking instead of enriching political elites, our online noise will never translate into real progress. Wake up, Nigerians.
