Patty Duke, born Anna Marie Duke, was an American actress best known for playing Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker and for her dual role in The Patty Duke Show. Her performance in The Miracle Worker earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress when she was 16. Over a career that spanned more than six decades, Duke won an Oscar, two Golden Globes and three Primetime Emmy Awards. She also served as president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1985 to 1988. Her later work included Valley of the Dolls, Me, Natalie and a television adaptation of The Miracle Worker. Duke spoke publicly about living with bipolar disorder after her diagnosis in 1982 and became a prominent mental-health advocate. She was married four times, had three children, including actors Sean and Mackenzie Astin, and died in 2016 at age 69. Her net worth at the time of her death was estimated at between $6 million and $10 million.

I agree, her advocacy feels especially meaningful because it adds a deeper dimension beyond her screen career.

It is striking that she was only 16 when The Miracle Worker earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

The famous roles are important, but reducing her career to Helen Keller and the dual TV role may miss the wider picture.

For anyone new to her work, starting with The Miracle Worker and an episode of The Patty Duke Show seems like a useful introduction.
