‘A Way Forward’: A Northern Nigerian Mother’s Journey to Survival
In the short film ‘A Way Forward’, Hadiza, a young mother in Northern Nigeria, faces a crisis when her husband Usman’s motorbike accident cuts off their main income. Landlord pressure and an empty pantry push her to act. Determined to keep her family afloat, Hadiza brews large batches of kunu to sell. But Mallam Balla, the local shopkeeper, sees her homemade drink as competition and withdraws his support. Tensions rise as Usman struggles with pride and fear of failing his wife. Just when hope seems lost, Hadiza’s kunu sells out and Mallam Balla returns, ready to back her venture. The film ends with Usman standing beside her, marking a new chapter of partnership. Starring Miriam Peters and Samson Solomon, written by Uche Mordi and directed by Ella Bakare, this film from the MTV Staying Alive Foundation’s Shuga Shorts Innovation Lab highlights everyday resilience across Africa.
