Kola Oyewo’s Three-Day Funeral Rites to Hold August 5–7 in Osun

The family of veteran actor, theatre scholar and cultural advocate Kola Oyewo has announced a three-day funeral programme from August 5 to 7, 2026, in Ile-Ife and Oba-Ile, Osun State. Oyewo died on June 12 at the age of 80. The rites will begin with a wake and service of songs at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Igboya, Ile-Ife, on August 5. A commendation mass, artistes’ night, cultural tributes and an exhibition of his works will follow on August 6. On August 7, his body will be taken to Oba-Ile for a lying-in-state, requiem mass and interment. A reception will hold afterwards at Aderounmu Grammar School Field. The burial itself is restricted to family members and close allies. Oyewo was celebrated for his contributions to Yoruba theatre, film and arts education. His notable roles included Odewale in The Gods Are Not to Blame and King Lapite in Saworoide. He also taught drama at Obafemi Awolowo University, Redeemer’s University and Elizade University.
