Peter Obi Urges Deferral of State Police Bill Over 2027 Election Rigging Fears

Peter Obi warns that implementing state police now could open doors for the current administration to influence the 2027 general election. He made the comments in a post on X on Friday. Obi acknowledged that the National Assembly’s passage of the State Policing Bill is a landmark step in meeting calls for decentralised security. But he argued the bill was rushed with no public hearing, stoking suspicions that governors could weaponise state forces against political opponents. He urged that the bill’s implementation be postponed until after the election. He also called for strong oversight measures, including an independent state-level Police Service Commission free from executive control, to protect citizens’ interests.
