50 Years On: How Shooting Stars and Rangers Ruled African Club Football
From 1975 to 1977, Nigerian clubs made a major mark on African football. Rangers International reached the 1975 African Cup of Champions Clubs final, while IICC Shooting Stars won the African Cup Winners’ Cup in 1976 after overcoming Tonnerre Kalara of Cameroon. Shooting Stars built a decisive 4–1 first-leg lead in Lagos, with Segun Odegbami among the scorers, before completing the tie in Cameroon. The triumph made them Nigeria’s first winners of a continental club competition. Rangers followed in 1977 by defeating Canon Yaoundé to win the African Cup Winners’ Cup, after meeting Shooting Stars in a famous semi-final known as the Brothers Clash. The era featured celebrated figures including Christian Chukwu, Emmanuel Okala, Segun Odegbami and Sam Ojebode. Shooting Stars later reached the African Champions Cup finals in 1984 and 1996 and won the inaugural CAF Cup in 1992, while Rangers also recorded several continental semi-final and quarter-final appearances.
