Lagos Issues Seven-Day Flood Alert, Urges Residents in Vulnerable Areas to Relocate
The Lagos State Government has advised residents of flood-prone communities to move temporarily to higher ground following a seven-day flood alert from the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency. Areas identified as vulnerable include Eti-Osa, Lagos Island, Oke-Ira Nla in Ajah, Kirikiri, Ilaje Waterfront, Isheri North, Kara, Itowolo, Ajegunle, Majidun, Ogolonto and parts of Agboyi. Communities downstream of Isheri Olofin have been placed on heightened alert from September 19 to 25. Residents near rivers, lagoons, wetlands, drainage channels and coastal areas have been urged to monitor official updates, protect lives and valuables, and avoid driving or walking through floodwaters. The government also warned that dumping refuse in drains and waterways could worsen flooding.
