Deputy Reps Spokesperson Philip Agbese Quits APC for Labour Party
Philip Agbese, member for Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency in Benue, formally defected from the All Progressives Congress to the Labour Party at Tuesday’s House plenary. Speaker Abbas Tajudeen read his letter along with 25 others, noting it is rare for a lawmaker to leave the majority for a minority party. Speaking to journalists, Agbese said his switch reflects his constituents’ wishes, not a personal governorship ambition or internal party disputes. He pledged to build the Labour Party’s structure in Benue ahead of the 2027 elections. His defection follows a prolonged crisis within the APC in Benue. Agbese denied the feud between Governor Hyacinth Alia and SGF George Akume influenced his decision, though observers link the APC’s instability to recent defections. Agbese thanked Akume as a political benefactor and stressed that his focus remains on service and grassroots support. He affirmed the Labour Party will field candidates in all 2027 elections in the state.
