Mexican Fans Face FIFA Sanctions for Anti-Gay Chant Ahead of 2026 World Cup
The Court of Arbitration for Sport has upheld FIFA’s fines against the Mexican Football Federation after fans continued using the slur “puto” during goal kicks. The federation was fined 140,000 Swiss francs but avoided a partial stadium closure. Despite education campaigns since 2015, fan conduct remains widespread. In response, Mexico launched the “La Ola Sí, El Grito No” campaign featuring members of their 1986 World Cup squad to promote the wave instead of discriminatory chants. Mexico will co-host the 2026 tournament with the United States and Canada. FIFA anti-discrimination monitors will oversee all matches to curb offensive chants across the three host nations.
