Awka Anglican Board Rejects Archbishop Ibezim’s Suspension, Threatens Breakaway
The Diocese of Awka Anglican Board has rejected the six-month suspension of Archbishop Alexander Ibezim by the Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Archbishop Henry Ndukuba. The board also opposed the appointment of Bishop Samuel Ezeofor as supervising bishop of Awka Diocese and coordinating bishop of the Province of the Niger. It said the matter is already before the court and argued that church authorities should not interfere while the cases are pending. In a communiqué issued after an emergency meeting, the board said the Church of Nigeria’s constitution does not empower the Primate to place a serving archbishop on compulsory leave or appoint a replacement in the circumstances. It directed diocesan organs to remain loyal to Ibezim and warned that the diocese could withdraw from the Church of Nigeria if the dispute continues.
