Turning NYSC Allowances into Industries to End Graduate Unemployment

Turning NYSC Allowances into Industries to End Graduate Unemployment — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Each year, the NYSC mobilises between 350,000 and 450,000 graduates who each receive ₦77,000 a month, costing roughly ₦400 billion annually. What if the government used this fund to build new industries—like manufacturing, agriculture, and production—and then absorbed corps members into permanent roles funded by those enterprises? As one batch joins an industry, the next ₦400 billion could seed another. Over time, NYSC would shift from a temporary service to a sustainable employment engine. This approach could dramatically lower graduate unemployment by turning allowance payments into lasting jobs.

Corps members could form cooperatives focused on local agro-processing, using allowance funds as seed capital and sharing skills to ensure project viability.
