Nigeria Tops Sub-Saharan Africa with 24 Universities in Times Higher Education Rankings

The Federal Government has announced that 24 Nigerian universities secured places in the 2026 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. This is an increase from last year’s 21 institutions and makes Nigeria the most represented country in Sub-Saharan Africa. Seventeen of the qualifying schools are federal universities. Despite chronic funding shortfalls, institutions like the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos have maintained high academic standards under difficult conditions. Their success highlights the dedication of lecturers and students working with limited resources. The Minister of Education hailed this achievement on his social media, calling it proof that structural reforms are yielding real results. University leaders and student groups agree that a stable academic calendar has been crucial to improving global standings. This milestone offers hope to everyone involved in public higher education. From policymakers in Abuja to freshers heading to their first lectures, it is a moment of pride for the entire academic community.
