The Rise and Rift: Kwankwaso’s Protégé’s Journey to Kano Governorship
In 1992, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, then Deputy Speaker, appointed a 29-year-old aide from his days at the Water Resources Department as his Personal Assistant. Over the next decade, the aide followed Kwankwaso through roles as Kano State Governor, Defence Minister, and Special Envoy, solidifying a bond of mentorship and trust. After stepping back from politics post-2015, the protégé reemerged in 2018 as Kwankwaso’s PDP candidate for governor. A disputed 2019 election ended in defeat, but in 2023 they switched to the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and secured a landmark victory, making the long-time aide the Governor of Kano. Within just two years in office, however, tensions surfaced between mentor and protégé. What began as a story of loyalty and opportunity has taken a troubling turn, raising questions about ambition, power dynamics, and the future of Kano’s leadership.
