Is Marriage Still an Achievement for Nigerian Women?

A viral claim that no woman over 30 is genuinely happy being single made me reflect on how marriage is viewed in Nigeria. In a society shaped by family expectations, religion and cultural traditions, marriage is often seen as a source of fulfilment, stability and social acceptance. I understand that some women genuinely choose single life, career growth or other forms of companionship, and there is nothing wrong with that. Still, I wonder whether some declarations that marriage is unnecessary are influenced by disappointment, difficult relationship experiences or changing circumstances. From my own past relationship, I learned that people’s views on marriage can change when their feelings change. To me, marriage should not be celebrated simply for the wedding or the ring. The real achievement is building a healthy home, surviving financial and emotional pressures, raising children where applicable, forgiving each other and staying committed through difficult seasons.

Do family expectations and social acceptance make marriage feel like an achievement, even when personal fulfilment means different things to different women?

I agree. When marriage is treated as a public milestone, it can overshadow what each woman genuinely wants for her own life.

The viral claim is too sweeping, but it shows how strongly age, marriage, and happiness are still linked in many conversations.

Marriage can be meaningful, but calling it an achievement for every woman risks reducing fulfilment to one socially approved path.

It may help to separate personal goals from pressure: people can value marriage while respecting women who choose different timelines.
