Ghana’s Parliament Approves Strict Anti-LGBTQ Bill
Ghana’s parliament has approved the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025. The measure passed by voice vote after the Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee recommended its adoption. The law maintains up to three years in prison for same-sex acts. It also bans funding, sponsorship or promotion of LGBTQ activities, with sanctions ranging from three to five years behind bars. A new duty to report prohibited LGBTQ acts carries up to three years’ imprisonment for non-compliance. The bill further amends the Extradition Act of 1960 to classify these offences as extraditable. The approved bill now goes to President Mahama, who faces pressure to sign it into law despite legal challenges to an earlier version under the previous administration.
