Why Movies Do Not Always Need to Be Realistic
Movies are built on illusion. Camera angles, lighting, editing and colour all reshape reality to create a feeling. Demanding total realism from every film can limit the very tools that make cinema memorable. What matters most is often emotional truth. Superhero films, musicals and fantasy stories may ignore real-world rules, yet still connect because their themes of grief, love, responsibility and sacrifice feel human. Nollywood also uses melodrama, supernatural elements and heightened family conflict to explore cultural fears and moral choices. Realism is valuable in biopics, social dramas and historical films, but it should serve the story rather than become a rule every filmmaker must follow. Should a film be judged mainly by how believable it is, or by how deeply it moves its audience?
