Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Reflects on Extreme Self-Harm Over Infidelity
Semiloore Akerele, a Nigerian-American Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, shared a striking case from one of her nursing rotations. She treated a patient who amputated his own penis because he believed it was the root of his repeated cheating. After a heated argument with his wife, the man performed the act himself. Emergency staff attempted reattachment, but the tissue became gangrenous and required full amputation. Akerele underscored the serious psychiatric factors at play and used the example to challenge men who blame biology for unfaithfulness. “For men who say they can’t help or unintentionally cheat, what does that really mean? Have you thought about removing the source of the problem?” she asked.
