Court of Appeal Orders Kano Chief Judge to Fast-Track Sheikh Kabara’s Death Sentence Appeal
The Court of Appeal in Kano has struck out Sheikh Abduljabar Kabara’s appeal against his death sentence and remitted the case to the Kano State Chief Judge for prompt hearing. Kabara has been on death row since December 2022, after a Kano Upper Shari’a Court found him guilty of blasphemy and sentenced him to hanging. His appeal to the High Court was adjourned sine die before reaching the Appeal Court. A three-member panel led by Justice Mohammed Lawal-Shuaibu cited procedural irregularities and the absence of legal representation in a capital offence. The court declared the existing processes incompetent but directed that the case be heard swiftly by the state’s Chief Judge. Kabara also requested a transfer back to Kurmawa custodial facility, citing safety concerns at Kuje Correctional Centre.
