Kaduna Says 500,000 Hectares of Farmland Have Been Reclaimed From Bandits

The Kaduna State Government says it has recovered about 500,000 hectares of farmland from bandits over the past three years. The Commissioner for Information, Ahmed Maiyaki, said the reported gains followed the implementation of the Kaduna Peace Model and improved cooperation among security agencies. He said farmers have returned to previously abandoned land in Birnin Gwari, Chikun, Kachia and other affected areas. According to Maiyaki, thousands of farmers have planted crops on land they could not access for up to nine years. He said insecurity has reduced but persists in some border communities linked to security challenges in Niger, Zamfara and Katsina states. HURIWA welcomed the reported recovery and called for a programme to help displaced residents reclaim their land, rebuild communities and access security, farm inputs, credit, schools, healthcare and other basic services.
