Edomites: The People God Hated – A Black African Perspective
We address Africans and Black people, recognising that others may hold different biblical interpretations. We do not seek to dominate or be dominated by any one view. This article explores how European missionaries shaped our understanding of Scripture. It highlights common colonial teachings that portrayed Jesus and the Israelites as white and promoted white supremacy through various church traditions. We examine passages in Proverbs, Malachi, Romans and Genesis that list behaviours God hates and explain why God’s judgment on Esau and the Edomites can be seen as a critique of violent oppression. We also reflect on the prophetic destiny of Edom in Obadiah and the promise of restoration for the oppressed Black nation. As Black Africans, we see our struggle against racism and injustice as part of God’s mission to set the oppressed free. Amen.
