World Cup: Milei Signs Decree Targeting Anti-Argentine Hate Speech

World Cup: Milei Signs Decree Targeting Anti-Argentine Hate Speech

Argentine President Javier Milei has signed an emergency decree allowing authorities to deny entry, revoke visas or deport foreigners accused of inciting discrimination or violence against Argentines because of their nationality. The move follows weeks of backlash over alleged refereeing bias in Argentina’s favour during the World Cup. Critics, rival fans and some public figures claimed FIFA decisions benefited Argentina and Lionel Messi. FIFA has also opened disciplinary proceedings involving the Argentine Football Association over a scuffle, alleged racist abuse and fan misconduct. Argentine players are reportedly under investigation over a banner restating the country’s claim to the British-controlled Falkland Islands after their semi-final win over England. Milei described the criticism as a coordinated anti-Argentina campaign, making unsubstantiated claims against foreign governments and political opponents. The accusations have contributed to a diplomatic row with Brazil.
