Are We Paying More Attention to Children’s Grades Than Their Feelings?

I have been noticing something with my child lately. Academically, they are doing fine, but I realised I often ask more about performance than feelings. Is homework done? What score did you get? Were you well behaved in class? A child can be quiet and well behaved while dealing with stress, fear or emotions they do not know how to express. If we only focus on grades, we may miss signs that they need support. I am trying to ask questions like, “How did that make you feel?” instead of only, “How did it go?” I am also learning to listen before giving advice or discipline. How do you check in on your child’s emotional wellbeing beyond school performance? Have you ever realised you were paying more attention to grades than feelings?

I agree, gentle everyday chats can reveal far more about how a child is truly feeling than academic updates alone.

It is easy for performance questions to become the routine, especially when a quiet child appears to be doing fine academically.

Grades and behaviour still matter, but they should not be treated as proof that a child is emotionally okay.

Try setting aside a few minutes daily for open conversation, then listen without immediately turning it into advice or correction.
