Why Delta State Natives Clash with Their Own When They Move Away
I am a native of Isoko in Delta State and I have lived and worked in places like Ghana and Benin Republic. I’ve noticed that tribes such as Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, and Benue people often welcome and support their fellow indigenes when they meet abroad. But in the case of Delta State people, there seems to be a pattern of hostility toward one another outside home. They sometimes align with other tribes at work or in new cities and even gang up against a fellow Deltan. This division can affect our political strength. In the 2023 presidential election, our preferred candidates underperformed here. At my current job, a fellow Uwherobo man joined colleagues from Akwa Ibom in victimizing me. I’ve stayed on, though, because I can’t walk away from a ₦450k monthly salary.
