From 31-0 Defeat to First Victory: American Samoa’s Football Turnaround

On 11 April 2001 American Samoa suffered a 31-0 loss to Australia in a World Cup qualifier. It remains the largest margin in international football history and later inspired the film Next Goal Wins. At that time the US territory had joined FIFA less than four years earlier. With limited infrastructure and a squad averaged just 18 years old, they were outmatched. The result prompted FIFA to introduce preliminary qualifying rounds for smaller nations. In 2011 the Football Federation appointed coach Thomas Rongen to build belief, improve training and expand selection. His approach reshaped the team’s culture. Later that year American Samoa beat Tonga 2-1 in 2014 World Cup qualifying, securing their first-ever competitive win. That milestone proved even the lowest-ranked nation can turn its fortunes around.
