Pope Leo XIV Highlights Inequality and Resource Exploitation in Angola
During an open-air Mass in Saurimo, Pope Leo XIV condemned exploitation, corruption and inequality in Angola’s diamond-rich northeast. He warned that when injustice prevails, the wealth of nations ends up in the hands of a few while many remain in poverty. Thousands gathered near the Catoca mine, which produces about 75 percent of Angola’s diamonds, yet the region still faces underdevelopment despite the country’s oil and mineral wealth. Earlier, the pontiff visited a home for the elderly affected by violence, describing his presence there as a blessing. He also urged government leaders to heal the scourge of corruption by fostering a culture of justice and sharing. The visit is part of his ongoing African tour, during which he has consistently called for greater equality, ethical governance and respect for the vulnerable.
