Nigerian Widows Speak on Harmful Mourning Rites, Property Loss and Forced Marriage
Across Nigeria, some widows face a second ordeal after losing their husbands. Published accounts describe forced mourning rites, isolation, humiliation, property seizure and pressure to remarry within the family. I examine testimonies from women who say they were accused of causing their husbands’ deaths, confined for weeks or months, denied food, evicted from their homes and threatened with the loss of their children. Some also reported sexual violence disguised as cultural cleansing rites. Although customs differ across communities, no tradition should strip a grieving woman of her dignity, safety or livelihood. Nigerian laws offer some protection, but many widows still need accessible legal support, enforcement and communities willing to challenge harmful practices.
