Why Do Spiritual Battles Seem to Increase When You Draw Closer to God?

Many Christians wonder why life can feel more difficult when they become more serious about their faith. A balanced biblical view is that not every hardship is a demonic attack. Some trials refine faith, some temptations require resistance, and some difficulties are part of life in a broken world. Jesus was affirmed by God before He was led into the wilderness to be tempted. Joseph, David, Daniel, Peter and Paul also faced opposition while walking in divine purpose. Their struggles were not proof that God had abandoned them; they often became seasons of growth, preparation and deeper trust. James 4:7 teaches us to submit to God and resist the devil. Rather than measuring closeness to God by the number of battles we face, we should look at our obedience, spiritual fruit and growing likeness to Christ. Have you experienced a season when your faith deepened but life became more challenging?

Sometimes believers may over-spiritualise normal setbacks, which can distract from responsibility, wise counsel, or needed changes.

Prayer and resistance can go alongside practical steps: examine the situation, seek support, and keep steady habits during hard times.
