Nigeria and African Group Call for Robust Migration Governance at UN Forum

Nigeria and African Group Call for Robust Migration Governance at UN Forum

At the International Migration Review Forum 2026 in New York, Nigeria and the African Group urged stronger cooperation and practical systems to protect migrants and engage the diaspora. Dr. Bernard M. Doro, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, spoke on behalf of both delegations. He stressed the need for governance that upholds human dignity, safeguards rights and advances sustainable development. The minister called for expanded legal migration pathways through labour mobility partnerships, skills recognition frameworks and lower remittance costs. He also highlighted the importance of climate adaptation measures and resilience-building in origin countries. In its national statement, Nigeria detailed efforts to implement the Global Compact for Migration. It noted progress in policy coordination, data management and reintegration, while identifying gaps in financing and public awareness. Future priorities include ethical recruitment, stronger diaspora investment and sustainable reintegration programmes.

It's interesting they mention robust governance, but similar calls in past forums rarely translate into concrete action.

I'm not convinced that UN forums can deliver real change; too often these resolutions end up as hollow promises.

Setting up regional info hubs could help track migrant movements and ensure timely assistance, starting with pilot projects in West Africa.
