WHO Warns Ebola in DRC Is Spreading Faster Than Ever

WHO Warns Ebola in DRC Is Spreading Faster Than Ever

The World Health Organization has warned that the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is expanding more rapidly than any previous epidemic. In just two months, the crisis has seen over 2,000 confirmed cases and 796 deaths, making it the third-largest Ebola outbreak on record. First declared on May 15 in the conflict-hit Ituri province, the Bundibugyo strain has spread to five provinces in the DRC and even crossed into neighbouring Uganda. There is no approved vaccine or specific treatment for this rare strain, and more than 80% of new cases are detected outside known contact lists. Health officials say delayed access to care and ongoing insecurity are major hurdles. About two-thirds of deaths have occurred in communities before patients reached a treatment centre, and attacks on response teams—such as the recent assault on a facility in Bunia—continue to hamper efforts.

Seeing over 2,000 confirmed cases in two months is alarming, but I wonder if reporting delays or testing issues are influencing these numbers.

Not sure we should assume WHO data captures the full picture, considering remote regions might be underreported and local containment efforts vary widely.

Community education, quicker contact tracing, and mobile treatment centers could help slow Ebola's spread before it overwhelms local health systems.
