Living in Georgia: A Nigerian Student on Facing Overt Racism Abroad
Samson left Nigeria in 2023 when his family moved to the UK. He later chose to study medicine in Georgia for its lower tuition costs. Life in the UK felt comfortable and accessible but came with subtle, hard-to-prove racism at work. In Georgia, the treatment is more direct. Strangers stare, some children shout the N-word, and people often record him out of curiosity or hostility. Despite these challenges, Samson says the insults don’t faze him. He feels safe going out at any time and has built a diverse circle of friends in both countries. He plans to finish medical school in Georgia and then return to the UK to build his career. Living abroad has its ups and downs, but he sees his future outside Nigeria.
