Taraba Teachers Reject ₦5,000 Salary Deduction for Biometric ID Cards

Primary school teachers in Taraba State have rejected the deduction of ₦5,000 from their salaries and arrears for permanent biometric identity cards. The teachers, operating under the Concerned Affected Teachers of Taraba State, described the deduction as illegal and unfair. They argue that staff identity cards, biometric capture and personnel records are administrative responsibilities that should be funded by the employer, not workers. They also questioned TSUBEB’s claim that the Nigeria Union of Teachers approved the deduction, insisting that union officials cannot authorise deductions from individual teachers’ earnings without their consent. The group said the new deduction follows an earlier ₦3,000 charge for APER forms. The teachers have asked Governor Agbu Kefas to investigate the matter, disclose the identity-card contractor and procurement process, and ensure that the deducted funds are refunded.
