Woman Alleges UNTH Delayed Emergency Care for Pregnant Crash Victim

My heavily pregnant younger sister, her three-year-old son and other passengers were hit by a hit-and-run trailer on the Odudukoko–Port Harcourt Expressway on Sunday, 26 July. Nigerian Army officers returning from a conference reportedly stopped to help after bystanders were taking photos and videos. My sister was unconscious, her son had a head injury and was bleeding, and another victim was calling for help. The officers rushed them to UNTH Ituku-Ozalla. At the emergency unit, staff allegedly refused to admit them until the officers forced their way in and demanded immediate treatment. A scan later showed that the baby was in fetal distress. Despite my pleas for an emergency Caesarean section, we were told that only one anaesthetist was on duty and already attending another surgery. My sister could not move her legs and was in severe pain during the pelvic scan. I allege that doctors and porters left me to help return her to the stretcher. I began contacting people I knew at the hospital in an effort to get urgent attention for her.

Has UNTH responded to the allegation, especially about what happened after the pregnant crash victim arrived?

Agreed. Before conclusions, the hospital's own account of the emergency-care allegation is important.

The account is painful because it involves a heavily pregnant woman, a small child, and a hit-and-run crash.

The allegation deserves attention, but the hospital's account and the full timeline should also be heard before conclusions are fixed.

Authorities should preserve records from the emergency visit and investigate both the alleged delay and the hit-and-run trailer.
