Nigeria Takes Lithium Lead: Africa’s Largest Processing Plant Opens in Nasarawa

Nigeria Takes Lithium Lead: Africa’s Largest Processing Plant Opens in Nasarawa — 1 of 4
1 / 4

On July 2, 2026, President Bola Tinubu commissioned a $250 million lithium processing facility at the Endo industrial hub in Nasarawa State. The plant, built by Diamond New Energy alongside Chinese partners Jiuling and Canmax, can process 6,000 metric tonnes per day—about three million tonnes per year. This milestone marks Nigeria’s shift from exporting raw minerals to full-scale local processing and value addition. The combined capacity of the partnering firms now accounts for over 20% of global lithium output. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the launch, the government says the facility will boost Nigeria’s role in the global battery minerals market and drive job creation in the region.

It's great news but I'm skeptical this facility can avoid the typical cost overruns and delays that often plague large industrial projects in Nigeria.
