Nearly 30 Cruise Ship Crew Held in U.S. Child Exploitation Probe, Including Disney Line Staff

Nearly 30 Cruise Ship Crew Held in U.S. Child Exploitation Probe, Including Disney Line Staff

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers boarded eight cruise ships in San Diego between April 23 and 27 as part of an enforcement operation targeting child sexual exploitation material. Officials interviewed 28 crew members from the Philippines, Portugal and Indonesia. Authorities allege that 27 of them were involved in offences related to receipt, possession, transport or distribution of illicit child abuse material. CBP revoked the visas of the detained crew and sent them back to their countries of citizenship. It remains unclear exactly how many served on Disney Cruise Line vessels or which companies operated the other ships. Disney says it fully cooperated with authorities, enforces a zero-tolerance policy and has parted ways with any staff implicated.

I agree they must step up background checks and onboard monitoring, but can that truly stop deep-rooted abuses? Something more robust's needed.

It's surprising an operation over just a few days covered eight ships yet only 28 crew got interviewed. Feels a bit narrow in scope.

Let's not paint every Filipino, Portuguese or Indonesian staff member with the same brush just because a few officers questioned them.

Cruise operators should implement regular training on identifying and reporting exploitation risks, and ensure anonymous reporting channels are available to crew and passengers.
