Why Bad Things Happen to Good People: A Christian Perspective
I believe the question is not why bad things happen only to good people, but why evil and suffering exist at all. Pain can affect anyone, including faithful Christians. Scripture does not promise a life without storms, but it gives believers hope, strength and the assurance of God’s presence through them. Jesus Himself experienced rejection, deprivation and suffering. His disciples and many of the apostles also suffered at the hands of evil people. This shows that faith does not make anyone immune to hardship, and Christians should avoid teaching that believers will never face pain or loss. The Bible teaches that God does not tempt anyone with evil. Yet, in a fallen world, trouble can come without warning. Like a house built on rock, the righteous may face the same rain and wind as everyone else, but can stand through faith, prayer and dependence on God. Some questions may remain unanswered, especially when tragedy takes a life. In those moments, I believe we must rest in God’s goodness, pray for deliverance from evil, and hold on to the Christian hope that pain, suffering and death will not have the final victory.
