Seeking Peace in Jos: Managing Religious Leadership Disputes
Jos faces a power struggle between Muslim fundamentalists and its established traditional leadership. The city grew under British rule, but it has long-held non-Islamic customs and governance. Cities like Kano, Sokoto, Ilorin and Iwo show the influence of Islamic rule today. In those places, religious leaders hold authority and sometimes act with impunity. The push to make Jos another city under strict Islamic control fuels recurring unrest. Most residents are non-Muslim, and they view this as an attempt to override their majority rule. A lasting solution must respect Jos’s non-Muslim traditions. Muslims should work with the local majority under state policing. If cooperation fails, peaceful relocation may be the only way to ensure stability.
