Udeze Urges Repeal of Harmful Widowhood Laws on International Widows’ Day
As Nigeria observes International Widows’ Day 2026, the Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Somtochukwu Udeze, called on legislative bodies across the South-East to repeal laws and customs that strip widows of their rights and dignity. He condemned social stigma and abusive inheritance practices that leave widows homeless and destitute. He urged traditional rulers to abolish harmful widowhood rituals and protect these women from exploitation. He also appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to back Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s widow empowerment initiatives. He encouraged widows to uphold their honour, reminding them that they are not alone and that God stands with them.
