Tinubu: Security Forces Neutralised 13,000 Terrorists in One Year

President Bola Tinubu said that Nigerian security forces neutralised more than 13,000 terrorists in the past year. He revealed this during his Democracy Day address to highlight the impact of renewed military offensives and intelligence-driven operations. He noted an 81% drop in terror-related deaths since 2015. He credited sustained counter-terrorism efforts and stronger collaboration with the United States, France and other partners. The President pointed to a recent operation in Arege, Borno State, which degraded a major ISWAP command centre. He also detailed the Operation Safe Corridor deradicalisation programme, saying over 124,000 fighters and their dependants have surrendered since 2023. Tinubu warned that the surrender window would not stay open indefinitely. He said Nigeria’s 2026 budget allocates N5.41 trillion to defence and security—the highest ever—and called on all citizens to unite against crime.

Local leaders should partner with security agencies to monitor affected areas and support reintegration programmes for former militants.
