Atiku Criticizes Tinubu’s Reversal on WAEC and NECO Fee Hike
Atiku Abubakar has welcomed the federal government’s decision to suspend the planned increase in WAEC and NECO registration fees. He argues that Nigeria is not a laboratory for “reckless policy” and that sound governance requires consultation before imposing burdens on citizens. He raised concerns that this administration routinely announces harsh measures with little evidence of meaningful consultation, only to backtrack after overwhelming public opposition. Such a pattern, he says, reflects poor policy formulation rather than responsive leadership. The proposed hike would have raised fees to ₦50,000 for both exams, up from the current ₦27,000 for WAEC and ₦30,000 for NECO. Atiku warns this increase would have created a new financial barrier for millions of Nigerian students already struggling with inflation and rising living costs.
