Canada Issues Nigeria Travel Warning After Ondo Methanol Outbreak Kills 48
Canada has updated its travel advisory for Nigeria after a methanol poisoning outbreak in Ondo State killed 48 people and left about 182 others requiring treatment. The victims reportedly consumed a locally brewed alcoholic drink in Odigbo Local Government Area, with additional cases reported in Irele. Health authorities warn that methanol can quickly damage the kidneys, eyes and brain, and may cause organ or respiratory failure. NAFDAC said tests on unlabelled drink samples found high concentrations of methanol. Fifteen people have been arrested as investigators trace the source, while residents are advised to avoid unregulated alcohol and buy drinks only from reputable outlets.
