How Bandits Stole Our Home, Land and Livelihood
I built a two-bedroom house over six years, but bandits took everything: our home, three plots of farmland, my wife’s crops and our backyard chickens. We left behind furniture and clothes because we couldn’t carry it all. Since moving to town, life has been a struggle. I earn ₦230,000 a month, yet food costs leave nothing to save. A crate of eggs now costs ₦5,100, and 30 eggs for seven children and two adults don’t last a week. Back in the village, eggs often went bad and we smoked fish to feed the family for months. Here, even a small pack of dry fish feels like a luxury. Once the bandits are defeated, I plan to return to our village with my family. Special thanks to my wife, who has kept us going through her fried groundnut business. She works tirelessly without complaint, cooking and caring for all of us.
