Lagos Launches Digital Archives Initiative to Safeguard Its History
The Lagos State Government has unveiled a comprehensive plan to digitise its archival records and protect the state’s documentary heritage. Announcing the initiative at the 2026 International Archives Day organised by the Lagos State Records and Archives Bureau, the Information Commissioner stressed that technology is key to preserving culture, identity and the stories of every citizen. Speakers warned that countless events—from everyday community experiences to Lagos’s COVID-19 response—risk being lost without proper documentation. They highlighted efforts like the recent documentary on M.K.O. Abiola and the renovation of the Oba of Lagos palace as vital to conserving national heritage. Officials called for stronger investment in digital preservation tools, community archives and professional training. They urged collaboration among government agencies, schools, cultural organisations and citizens to ensure transparency, accountability and a lasting record of the state’s collective memory.
