According to health reports, global authorities are working to contain a cluster of respiratory illnesses aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship. The Andes strain has so far led to five confirmed cases, three suspected infections and three passenger deaths on a voyage carrying about 150 people from 23 countries. Hantaviruses are spread by rodents, with humans infected through inhaling particles from rodent urine, droppings or saliva. Initial symptoms include fever and muscle aches, which can escalate to severe pneumonia or kidney failure, with mortality rates up to 50%.
