Baloyi Urges CAF to Separate WAFCON From Women’s World Cup Qualifiers
Former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Brian Baloyi has urged CAF to stop using the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals as the main route to the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Baloyi said dedicated World Cup qualifying matches would give African women’s teams more competitive games and reduce the pressure of competing for continental glory and World Cup places in one tournament. His comments follow South Africa’s 2-1 play-in win over Nigeria, which kept Banyana Banyana in contention for the 2027 Women’s World Cup. The result means the Super Falcons will miss the tournament for the first time since making their debut at the inaugural edition in 1991.
