Why Nigeria’s Flawed Centralized System Matters More Than Leadership
In a recent forum debate, Peter Obi argued that Nigeria’s only problem is bad political leadership. He said the nation is blessed but its leaders fail to deliver. But leadership is only a symptom of a deeper issue. Nigeria’s highly centralized governing structure does not suit its diverse, sectional population. No leader can push genuine reforms while appeasing divisive forces like tribalism, terrorism and ethnic profiling. To achieve real progress, the 1999 constitution must be dissolved. A national referendum could birth a truly decentralized framework built on justice and equity. Without this fundamental change, corrupt leaders will continue to dominate, and the masses will keep suffering. Until the system itself is overhauled, even the best leader will remain constrained. A revolution in governance, not just a change of faces, is the only way out.
