ADC Anambra Chairman Brands Today’s Congress Illegal, Exco Suspends Activities
Patrick Obianyo, Anambra State chairman of the African Democratic Congress, has publicly dissociated himself and the state executive committee from today’s planned party congress. He insists the exercise is illegal, null and void. Obianyo told our correspondent that the state Exco had formally informed INEC of a suspension on all party congresses. He accused “disgruntled elements” of organising an unauthorised meeting and warned that INEC officials would not attend. Despite his objections, senior ADC figures and some lawmakers are poised to proceed with the congress at noon. The dispute reflects a wider national leadership crisis within the party, which has drawn INEC’s scrutiny based on a recent court ruling. Senator Victor Umeh criticised INEC’s involvement, arguing that Nigerian courts lack jurisdiction over internal party disputes. He cited Supreme Court precedents and the amended Electoral Act to contend that internal party affairs are not justiciable.
