Why Actors’ Heart Rates Rise During Live Performances
Actors often experience a faster heart rate before and during a live performance. Anxiety, stage exposure and the pressure of being judged by an audience can trigger this physical stress response. A 2017 study found that actors’ heart rates rose shortly before they stepped on stage, even when they said an audience did not make them feel more stressed. The length of monologues, level of experience and actions performed on stage also affected heart-rate changes. Heart rates usually fall after a monologue, demanding scene or the end of a show. However, applause can cause another sudden spike. Similar reactions are common among public speakers and musicians. Despite performance anxiety, acting may also help some people manage stress linked to social anxiety over time.
