Edo Health Adviser Alleges Medical Student’s Treatment Contributed to Governor’s Aide’s Death

Edo State’s Special Adviser on Health Matters, Dr Andrew Iyamu, has alleged that a final-year University of Benin medical student treated Alhaji Danjuma Garba, an aide to Governor Monday Okpebholo, before his death on January 10, 2026. Iyamu said Garba was receiving care at a private hospital in the Uselu area of Benin City. He alleged that the student, who was training at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, had acted as the family’s doctor for years despite not being a qualified practitioner. According to the adviser, Garba’s condition had deteriorated before efforts were made to transfer him to a better-equipped facility. He warned residents to seek care from qualified medical professionals and said the Edo government would continue monitoring compliance with medical regulations.
