Iran Seeks to Host World Cup Fixtures in Mexico Over US Security Fears
The Iranian Football Federation is in talks with FIFA to move its 2026 World Cup matches from the United States to Mexico. Federation president Mehdi Taj said they refuse to travel to America if Tehran’s security cannot be guaranteed. Tensions rose after US and Israeli strikes killed Iran’s supreme leader. Iran’s Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamal later confirmed there were “no conditions” under which the team could participate in the tournament. Iran is drawn against New Zealand, Belgium and Egypt. Their first two games are scheduled for SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, with the final group match in Seattle.
